Anecdote: why do we pronounce it “Breuille” and not “Bro-gli”?
Because the name Broglie comes from Piedmontese, a language of Italy. In this language, gli corresponds to a single sound, the wet l , noted [ʎ], whose pronunciation is close to [j], as at the end of the word famille. We should therefore pronounce[bʁɔj] , “ broille ”, and this is also the pronunciation that is most often given in dictionaries. However, the pronunciation of this surname seems to have evolved in French, so that today the pronunciation “breuille” is much more widespread.
