The Samuel de Champlain Prize was created in 1997 by the France-Canada Institute to annually recognize two personalities, one Canadian, the other French, each having worked to highlight French history and culture in Canada, Canadian in France, and thus contributed to the dissemination of the values that define and unite these two countries.

Behind, the transatlantic liner Champlain operated from 1932 to 1940 by the Compagnie Générale Transatlantique. On June 17, 1940, while at anchor in the port of La Rochelle, she hit a magnetic mine dropped the day before by the German army, and sank in 7 minutes.
